Emily Molloy's 'Catastrophes' is powerful music designed to make you feel

Vancouver’s songbird Emily Malloy just released her evocative track and video for ‘Catastrophes’. Emily perpetually releases impressive music, armed with her volcanic voice and wailing guitar skills. Her music is a delicious fusion of blues and rock and roll. Her approach to music is reminiscent of everything we love from the 70’s- it’s wild, reckless and free.
Catastrophes as an immediately addictive track. Like most powerful music, the song was inspired by struggle. The track was birthed through Emily’s road to find her voice, which has been paved with obstacles. Her tenacity is relentless however and she has managed to turn her demons into her muse.
Emily expresses that: “Catastrophes is essentially a snapshot of my inner dialogue from that time. I was living in the forest and would ground myself by reconnecting with the trees on a daily basis. This song was where I started to find my true power voice, by writing a song that was quite vocally demanding. (beyond what I was capable of at the time). Over the years the song has progressed and developed, and my voice has done the same.’
The song is an intimate invitation inside of Emily’s brain and soul, and it evidently sounds rather beautiful in there. The music video is a black and white aesthetic goldmine that pairs perfectly with the track itself. It is moody, deep and enthralling.
Emily speaks positively about this experience: We recorded at The Warehouse Studios with the amazing Eric Mosher, all in one day. I think we did all 4 songs in 7 hours actually, which is kind of insane. Eric is an absolute wizard. All of the songs were recorded live off the floor, which gives it that really real and authentic feel to it, which I absolutely love. I'm not sure I ever want to do it differently ever again! The major credit here though goes to my band (members of Chase The Bear and Disco Funeral) who absolutely slayed it that day. The talent that each of them brought to the table is unbelievable, and I am really grateful to have them all on this record. I really don't think it would have turned out the way it did without having the chemistry of the 6 of us together in that amazingly beautiful space. There is a very specific feel to this EP, with a magic combination of very talented people on both sides of the mixing board! I am super lucky. The video was filmed by Kevin Parker (Chase The Bear), and edited by David Carrier and Sasha Mislitsky (Sincerely Craig).”
Emily is a true musician’s musician and does it all straight from the soul. Her Janis Joplin meets Lucinda Williams-esque pipes is a gift she uses wisely. Her songwriting is the real backbone to her music through. She truly lives inside of each track and her energy is palpable. Emily says that “I absolutely love rock and roll. I love the blues. I love grunge. With every fibre of my being, I love music that makes you FEEL something. That's what we are all here for right?’ She is right and Catastrophes is a wonderful proclamation of her affinity for music.
