Who the Hell is Bucky Cromwell?
When Citrus Magazine got a request to review “LIE$” the new “Bucky Cromwell” record, our first response was … who the hell is this stickman Bucky Cromwell? Since it was from CBG Artist Development - the folks responsible for a plethora of successful Canadian artists including MacKenzie Porter and Chantal Kreviazuk - we decided to bite.
Turns out, LIE$ is a fresh, brazen and bold music project that tackles subjects like propaganda, our current society and the environment, while mirroring love and self-reflection. All done within the content of highly melodic pop hooks. It’s a love letter to mother earth, a middle finger to society and a high five to rock and roll. From poignant ballads like LIES through up-tempo alt-pop hooks like “Slave” and ‘None Of This is Real”, Bucky sings unfiltered, an underdog shedding the truth on our overly-saturated world.
As we dig further, we see an artist who seems to be documenting a wayward world as he sees it. Through his music and social media - he pushes environmental issues and attacks conspiracy pedlars (which a number of songs oh his record LIE$ reference) with his own tongue and cheek propaganda.
Cromwell may never be invited to audition for The Voice but his is genuine and it’s obvious he believes what he sings. Like a leather jacket, the production is both contemporary and classic.
LIE$ is a breath of fresh air and shines brightly in a sea of otherwise tepid music. There is something so wonderfully theatrical and empowering about this endless discovery of self-expression. This is a record by and for underdogs … cause we all have a little “Bucky” in us.
