Sophie Egan Presents Someone to Meet
By Rachael Ransom
San Francisco singer/songwriter, Sophie Egan’s new single Someone to Meet evokes a familiar feeling: to see someone across a room and be compelled to know them. How many of us have experienced meeting someone new and not being aware that they would become such an important part of our lives? Egan’s track has an infectious beat that drives its listeners to hang onto every word she sings, her voice’s smooth tone resembles Taylor Swift’s and leaves us begging know who it is she hopes to meet.
Egan’s latest single takes us on a journey through a crowded room in a pre-pandemic world. I had the pleasure of speaking with Sophie and she told me that the song was influenced by those she met at her college orientation. Excited by the possibility of new opportunities, Sophie was inspired by these new faces, one of which is still considered by Sophie to be one of her closest friends during her time there. With an echoey rhythm and dream-like vocal, Someone to Meet transports us to a time where we’re curious about what lies ahead. Sophie’s favourite lyric, ‘I know I’ll know you for my whole lifetime, don’t ask me how” touches on the human instinct to connect and create long-lasting, meaningful relationships with others.
When asking Egan about why that line in particular resonated with her most, she said “it’s like I have this feeling, but I don’t know what it means, don’t ask me why I know… It’s kinda one of those things that you couldn’t actually say out loud.”
Someone to Meet is beautifully introspective, diving deep into the many possibilities explored by asking “what if.” Sophie began writing music when she was ten years old, and now she and her brother write music together. This new single was based off a catchy guitar riff he spontaneously created. Reminiscent of Billie Eilish and her brother, the Egan siblings work as a team: Sophie’s brother has a strong background in music theory, his skillset helps Sophie perfect the melodies created through the lens in which she sees the world.
Someone to Meet leaves us wanting more, and Egan will deliver. She expressed a desire to release a series of singles starting in February, with a potential EP to follow. Sophie has big plans to continue to work on new music, and when I asked her if she had any advice for up and coming artists she told me, “just doing as much as you can, but not getting down on yourself. Making a song and putting it out is a huge step.”
Sophie Egan’s dedication, talent, and uplifting attitude is a sensational recipe for a long career ahead. Someone to Meet will be released on January 26th, and just like a chance encounter with a stranger, this single is not one that we’ll want to miss.
